Kusudama Flowers

I haven’t been updating this blog of late as I’ve been working on some new projects to sell at a fete I’m off to next weekend.

I saw a tutorial for Japanese origami kusudama balls on a website and decided I’d make one. I used newspaper and folded the individual petals for the first flower and then glued them together. It looked good, so I continued and made another eleven, the amount required to create a complete kusudama ball. It wasn’t until the last one that I realised I had put an extra petal in every one of my flowers, so they wouldn’t fit together properly to make the ball I had intented to create.

No worries, I actually liked them as single flower anyway. But I wasn’t a big fan of the newspaper look. Nothing a bit of silver spray paint wouldn’t fix. I tested it with one, and liked the result so sprayed the rest. I then used some wire and black raffia to make a stem for each flower, put it in place and was happy with the end product. Well that was until I saw some black and chrome coloured rhinestones in the craft section at a local shop. Bought one packet, took them home and tried them out as the flower centre. Perfect!

I am very happy about how they turned out. I’ve got some to sell at the markets and have also put them up for sale on my etsy store as well- Kusudama Flowers. I think they’d also look good in gold, and I’m open to custom colours, if you have a different preference. Just send me an email to wawabyjohnah@gmail.com and I’ll see what I can do. I hope you like these flowers as much as I do.

Have an awesome weekend. Catch you later

ExplosionMy most popular, and personal favourite image “Explosion” has been selected as a finalist in an international photography competition. Ephotoawards.com is focused towards helping amateur or professional photographers from all kinds of backgrounds, get their talent exposed within the photographic industry.

So that’s me. My talent has been exposed. I didn’t take out a place in the competition, but to be a finalist is an amazing feeling, especially when this is one of the first competitions I have entered online. Here’s the link to the gallery. My image is in the bottom row.

Welcome to my blog

Thanks for taking the time to look.  I truely appreciate it.

A little about me.  I’m Sarah Donoghue also known as Johnah and I’m a photographer, artist and designer (amongst other things).  My main passion is photography and my family and friends often get neglected, or left to sit around and wait for me, when I find a unique tree, beautiful flower, stunning landscape or something else interesting to photograph.

Explosion

The main subject of my photography is flowers.  I enjoy their beauty, complexness, bold colours, stricking features. I could spend every minute of every day admiring and photographing flowers. So many of the shots you see in my blog will be of flowers. My all time favourite flower photo I have taken is called “Explosion”. I’ve won numerous prizes and sold a number of copies of this photograph and I have it hanging proudly in my living room.

My next lens I purchase will be a macro lens. I have always enjoyed macro photography. I remember as a teenager at high school borrowing a friends macro lens and thoughouly loving it. And it goes hand in hand with floral photography. Getting close in on all the wonderful details, the pollen on the stamens, the texture of petals, the tiny insect crawling within the flower that is almost invinsible to the naked eye. Well having said that, I think I’d better head outside and start shooting. The lighting is pretty good today and it rained last night so there should be plenty of water drops around to photograph as well. So I will catch you later.

Have the best day ever
Sarah
